The era of the AI walled garden is cracking. As Big Tech faces a $1 trillion market wipeout over “AI bubble” fears, OpenAI has made a strategic concession: it cannot build everything alone.
On Thursday, the company launched Frontier, a new enterprise platform designed not just to host its own models, but to stitch together the messy, fragmented reality of corporate IT. The move signals a shift from “chatbots” to “agents”-and more importantly, from a closed ecosystem to an interoperable layer that admits competitors like Google and Anthropic into the fold.
The “Frontier” of Interoperability
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, was blunt during the briefing. “Frontier is really a recognition that we’re not going to build everything ourselves,” she said. “We are going to be working with the ecosystem to build alongside them.”
This is a pivot. For years, the narrative was that one model would rule them all. Now, with Frontier, OpenAI is positioning itself as the operating system for the agentic age. Barret Zoph, OpenAI’s general manager of B2B, described the shift as “transitioning agents into true AI co-workers.” Early adopters like Uber, State Farm, and Intuit are already testing the system. The promise is an “open agent execution environment” where software can use computers, run code, and manipulate files autonomously.
This “shared business context” is the Holy Grail of enterprise AI. It solves the biggest bottleneck: hallucination due to lack of context. By grounding agents in actual company data and giving them guardrails, OpenAI hopes to make them reliable enough for mission-critical workflows.
The Enterprise Revenue Race
The timing is not accidental. CFO Sarah Friar recently noted that enterprise customers account for 40% of OpenAI’s business, with a target of 50% by year-end. With consumer growth potentially plateauing, the enterprise is the new battleground.
But the pressure is on. Investors are asking hard questions about ROI. A $660 billion capex buildout hangs over the industry. Frontier is OpenAI’s answer: a tool that doesn’t just generate text, but theoretically does work.
